Full ground works and new paving for a countryside property in Colares: a hand-laid Portuguese calçada courtyard and driveway, a concrete paver yard by the stables, and linear drainage.

The Challenge
The courtyard, driveway and stable yard had worn, uneven surfaces with old broken slabs and no proper falls, so rainwater collected by the buildings. The work had to be done around mature shrubs, flower beds and existing steps without damaging them.
Our Solution
We removed the old surface with a mini excavator, dug out and levelled the ground, and built a compacted base with a sand bed. Linear drainage channels with grates were set in front of the stables and the covered area. The stable yard was paved with grey concrete pavers in a running bond, and the courtyard and driveway were hand-laid in white limestone calçada in a traditional fan pattern. The flower beds were re-edged with stone borders and the soil regraded.
The Result
A level, durable courtyard and driveway that drains properly, with classic Portuguese calçada that suits the character of the house and an easy-to-clean paved yard by the stables.
